Boating Can Be A Very Relaxing Pastime

Monday, July 19th, 2010

Boating can be a relaxing pastime, floating along on a river or lake without a care. For most people, the boating itself is the whole point of the hobby: once you’re in the boat, you’re set.

Plenty of people bring their boat to wherever they are going to be going boating on a trailer attached to the back of their automobile, provided the boat is small enough – larger boats have to be kept in marinas, which can be expensive. Even today, lots of people still build their own boats out of nothing over wood, nails and ingenuity.

There’s a great range of different boats, from the small to the large. The smallest boats are those designed to be rowed effectively by 2 people, followed by family-sized small boats. Most people who are into boating tend to have been boating with their family, their friends, and the main reason they take their family and friends along is simply because they’ve had such fun memories in the past, they just want it to be far better.

Once you get above small boats, you start to get into powerboats (also known as speedboats and motorboats). They start off as only too large to row, but can go as large as fifty feet long with cabins and large engines – in other words, you can get powerboats that can be as big as a mid size vehicle and about as big as a truck.

While boating is fun, however, it is also hobby in which you need to pay a lot of attention to safety. Lots of boaters die each year, mainly by falling overboard and drowning. It is important that you use common sense as well as making sure to comply with the relevant safety laws, particularly by always taking lifejackets with you.

Of course, boating isn’t entirely limited to just cruising around. You can also set up water-skis on the back of your boat and go water-skiing, or even enter boat races, if you think you’re quick enough. You can also fish, both in freshwater and in saltwater, with freshwater fishing two of the most popular things to do with a boat.

Lund, Sunshine Coast, British Columbia, Canada

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Lund is found at the north end of the Pacific Coastal Highway, also known as the Pan American Highway, one of the world’s longest highways. The other end is 15202 kilometres to the south in the South American town of Quellon, Porto Monte, Chile.

The tiny fishing village of Lund, a 20-minute drive north from Powell River on BC’s Sunshine Coast, has maintained its charm as a peaceful coastal village. Lund was named by brothers Frederick and Charles Thulin when they settled at the harbour in December 1889. It was named after Lund, Sweden from where they came. When they arrived, there were native homes around the harbour. The Thulins built a store and in 1892 a post office was added followed by the first licenced hotel north of Vancouver two years later. Logging and fishing were the source of income in the early years. Transportation was by water. A paved road leading south to Vancouver was completed in 1954 and coastal steamer service ended two years later.

Today, the historic Lund Hotel is at the centre of everything. The hotel has a restaurant and pub with ocean views. It is also home to a Laundromat, general store, post office, shops and other services.

The Sunshine Coast Trail which in found in this area offers great scenic hikes. It begins at Saltery Bay ferry terminal in the south to Sarah Point in the world-famous Desolation Sound in the north.

Outside the north end of the Lund Harbour, the pristine Copeland Islands hug the shoreline heading towards the world-renowned Desolation Sound Provincial Marine Park. Another route to Desolation Sound is up Okeover Inlet past the commercial oyster farms and through Malaspina Inlet. Both popular waterways are shared by sport and commercial fishers, pleasure boaters, and kayakers.

British Columbia was voted the number one scuba diving destination in the world by readers of Scuba Diving Magazine and the Lund area plays a major role in that acclaim. Jacques Cousteau rated it as second best in the world for abundance of sea life. Boasting the warmest waters north of the Baja, the clarity, especially in the winter (up to 30m), and the lack of predators are only two of the reasons the area is deservedly known as one of the premier diving locales on the west coast of North America.

As you may be aware, Lund has proclaimed itself the gateway to Desolation Sound. This world famous Provincial Marine Park is an ocean recreational area for power boaters, sail boaters and particularly for kayakers. Desolation Sound and the Discovery Islands harbours have numerous coves, inlets, and bays that remain unnamed even today.

This region is often called the vacation paradise because of the limitless opportunities, spectacular scenery, clear warm waters and a mild, year round climate.

Fiberglass Construction-Reasons For High Popularity Of Fiberglass Construction

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

There is marked global demand for fiberglass construction. Statistics indicate that nearly 70 % of the composite materials produced and used in modern industry is comprised by fiberglass. The major reasons for this are its versatility, its durability and its lightness of weight and its resistance to corrosion.

Before we delve into the reasons for high preference for fiberglass construction, let us first understand what fiberglass itself is made of. As the name itself suggests, ‘Fiberglass’ is made from very fine fibers of glass. It is borne of a complex process of reinforcement with polymer and glass products. Basically fiberglass is produced when liquid glass is passed through fine nozzles followed by solidification of these streams. The end result is that these streams are then brought together into a single strand and wound into a spool. Thereafter, these strands are combined together to produce different products. One of them is glass-fiber reinforced plastic. It consists of a combination of fibers of glass and polymer resin. Now the polymer resin which is normally used is polyester. This is in itself brittle and has low strength. When fibers of glass are embedded in the polymer, it becomes strong, resilient and flexible.

Because of their capacity for retaining air, blocks of fiberglass construction were widely used as insulation materials. As time passed, manufacturers found other, equally productive uses for fiberglass. It was found to have electrical insulation properties too. It has since been used to make electrical posts, boxes, conduits and electrical tapes. It also has sound absorption properties and has been used for sound proofing. Another important feature of fiberglass is its ability to reinforce the natural strength of other construction materials in the manufacture of fabrics, athletic equipment like fishing rods and surfboards, the body of automobiles, roofing and furniture among a hundred other things.

Because of the high tensile strength of fiberglass construction, the designers of products have better opportunities to actualize their artistic ideas. This is another very important reason why fiberglass is highly preferred in manufacturing over other materials. It can be formed into various shapes, given lots of functionality and combined with many different materials to produce exactly what the designer envisioned. Other convenient properties of fiberglass are its being lightweight, strong and non-corroding. It has a marked resistance to extreme temperatures, radiation and acidic chemicals. It can also be given different textures and colors, making it suitable for many kinds of products.

It is because of all these advantages that a lot of manufacturers want to go in for fiberglass construction. This is particularly true for those in the boat building industry. This is because it has been found that fiberglass contributes in a major way in building high-quality boats which are strong and durable. With the recent developments in technology of producing fiberglass, it has become a preferred choice of material for most boat manufacturers to build solid and laminated fiberglass hulls for boats and yachts.

There are many reasons to go with fiberglass construction to build something that will last long and look good: http://www.fiberglassconstruction2day.info .

It will require some serious research and study to pick the one that is specifically created for a beginning boat builder.

There is one method that stands out as the best choice for the amateur boat builder, and that is the stitch and glue method. In addition the wooden planks do not need to be screwed into the frame. Also, you just need to use basic tools you have at home. The construction materials needed are also pretty basic. The procedure to follow when building a stitch and glue boat goes like this. First you get the plywood cut to the dimensions laid out in your wooden boat plans. Eventually the wire comes out, and you seal it all up. To finish it all, the fiberglass sheathing soaked in epoxy resin glue is then applied to give a nice layer of protection. The final touch is to use paint or varnish to give it that smooth finished look.

To get a full and complete appreciation for boat building, you should ignore the expensive kits, and build the whole thing yourself. From the minute you download your wooden boat plans, you will be able to savor every moment along the way and relish the pride you feel as you put it into the water.
